One of the main issues affecting Sri Lankan migrants who come to New Zealand is the range of skin complications that can arise. Skin reflects our overall mental, physical, and internal health — a mirror of our wellbeing. Clear, healthy skin is also a major factor in a person’s confidence, self-esteem, and how they present themselves in society.
Skin — the largest organ in the body, covering the greatest surface area — is known in Ayurveda as tvak, and is described as having seven layers. It performs vital functions for both internal and external protection, acting as the body’s first line of defence against bacteria, viruses, UV rays, chemicals, and physical damage. It also regulates body temperature, retains moisture, provides sensation, and produces vitamin D.
Skin and the Three Doshas
In Ayurveda, skin health depends on the balance of the three doshas (vata, pitta, kapha), the nourishment of the seven dhatus (rasa, rakta, mamsa, and so on), and the strength of agni (digestion). Every person is born with their own unique constitution (prakriti), and this determines the characteristics of their skin.
Vata-predominant skin is naturally thin and dry, and when vata becomes aggravated, the skin becomes cracked, dry, and prematurely aged. Radiance and colour, along with healthy metabolism, are governed mainly by the pitta dhatu — specifically a sub-type called bhrajaka pitta. A balanced pitta is especially important for naturally radiant skin; when pitta becomes aggravated, it can cause redness, excess sweating, a burning sensation, and various skin conditions.
Kapha-predominant skin is naturally firm, oily, and well-hydrated, and when kapha becomes aggravated, it can lead to excess oiliness, blocked pores, breakouts, and itching.
A person’s agni (digestive enzymes / metabolic processes) plays a central role here, since it’s responsible for properly digesting food and supplying the nutrients the skin needs. A good example of this is that people who suffer from constipation, bloating, or gastritis often also suffer from skin conditions — which is why the health of the gastrointestinal system has such a direct effect on radiant, healthy skin.
Internal Care
A proper diet and adequate water intake are essential for skin health, and Sri Lankan migrants — often due to busy schedules — tend to fall into the habit of fast food, which weakens digestion. As much as possible, eat a balanced diet with plenty of green leafy vegetables (spinach, gotu kola, kale, moringa leaves), fruits (banana, papaya, pear, orange), grains (red rice, oats, barley, quinoa), and healthy fats such as coconut or olive oil.
Drink warm water to help remove toxins and keep the skin hydrated. Bael flower, ranawara, coriander seeds, barley, and savoury or leafy-green rice porridge (kanji) all support digestion.
Taking triphala powder as a tea helps regulate bowel movement and remove toxins, brightens the skin, reduces breakouts, heals rough patches, and slows the visible signs of ageing.
Yoga postures (Surya Namaskara, Vajrasana, pranayama) and getting at least 6–7 hours of sleep help reduce mental stress and support skin regeneration.
Sun exposure is important for producing vitamin D, but because UV levels in New Zealand are very strong, sunscreen and protective clothing are essential.
External Care
A full-body massage with warm coconut oil, sesame oil, olive oil, or a medicated oil improves blood circulation, enhances the skin’s radiance all over the body, nourishes the skin, and prevents dryness.
Udvartana (an Ayurvedic herbal exfoliating paste) removes dead, dry skin, improves blood flow, and supports the removal of toxins. A pack made from sandalwood, chickpea flour, and raw milk mixed with honey can be used on the face and the whole body — this should only be applied once a week, followed by using aloe vera or cucumber juice as a hydrating toner. Other Ayurvedic packs — turmeric with honey, aloe vera, sandalwood, milk, or saffron with milk — also brighten and cleanse the skin. Neem and tulsi help control breakouts and can be added to these packs as needed.
Covering the topic of skin in a short article is a challenge, but I believe the points above are important for maintaining healthy, radiant skin, and I look forward to meeting you again in another article like this one.
